Engine Instruments

Engine indication repaired and calibrated so the readings the crew act on are the readings the engine is actually producing.

Overview

What we see, and what we do.

Engine instruments get diagnosed last and blamed first. A temperature indication that reads high is treated as an engine problem long before anyone suspects the indicator, the probe or the wiring between them — and by then the troubleshooting bill is larger than the repair.

Calibration is the whole job here. An instrument that is accurate at one point on the scale and wrong at another is worse than one that is obviously broken, because the crew will trust it.

Equipment We Service

  • Exhaust Gas Temperature Indicator
  • Interstage Turbine Temperature Indicator
  • Cylinder Head Temperature Indicator
  • Oil Temperature Indicator
  • Oil Pressure Indicator
  • Fuel Flow Indicator
  • Fuel Quantity Indicator
  • Tachometer
  • Torque Indicator
  • Manifold Pressure Gauge
  • Engine Indication Display

Faults We See Most

  • Indication reading consistently high or low
  • Needle fluctuation or oscillation
  • Non-linear error across the scale
  • Intermittent or dropping-out indication
  • Fuel quantity disagreement between tanks
  • Indicator not tracking a known-good probe

Recognise one of these? Describe what was observed rather than what you think has failed — it is frequently a different unit.

Common Questions

Engine Instruments,
asked in practice.

The indication reads high. Is it the gauge, the probe, or the engine?
All three are candidates and they are cheap to separate. Substituting a known-good indicator, or bench-testing the one you have against a reference, rules the instrument in or out before anyone starts troubleshooting the engine.
Why would an instrument be right at one reading and wrong at another?
Because calibration error is rarely a constant offset. Wear, ageing components and mechanical friction all produce non-linear error, which is why we calibrate across the scale rather than confirming one point and calling it serviceable.
